Here are answers to the questions families ask most about the Ohio Boat Safe 3-Day Youth Experience.

All sessions are taught or supervised by certified captains who are BCI background-checked and trained in First Aid and CPR. Students learn in a safe, closely supervised setting led by experienced boating professionals.

Students learn essential boating skills, including safe boat handling, knot tying, navigation basics, weather awareness, VHF radio communication, hazard identification, and how to respond in emergency situations such as a man-overboard drill. These skills are taught through a mix of classroom learning and real on-water practice.

Safety is the foundation of the entire program. Each class is limited to just four students, allowing for close supervision. Certified captains lead all on-water activities, and instructors are trained in First Aid and CPR. Clear safety procedures guide every lesson on land and on the water.

Yes. Students take the official Ohio Boater Education Test during the program. Passing the test meets the state requirement for obtaining the Ohio Boater Education Certificate, which is required to operate a powered vessel in Ohio.

The course is designed for youth ages 10–18, and no prior boating experience is required. The program is welcoming to beginners and provides patient, step-by-step instruction.

Students should bring weather-appropriate clothing, sunscreen, water, lunch or snacks, and any required forms. We provide safety equipment and all instructional materials needed for the course.

Students practice docking, turning, slow-speed handling, communication, and navigation with close supervision from certified captains. They participate in safety drills and complete a guided boating experience on Lake Erie where they rotate through roles such as steering, lookout, radio communication, and navigation.

The program is held in Port Clinton on Catawba Island. Parents or guardians handle drop-off and pick-up each day at the designated location provided after registration.

If a student does not pass on the first attempt, instructors will review areas for improvement and help the student prepare for a retest. Our goal is to support every student through the process with patience and clear guidance.

Yes. The program is designed to be welcoming and supportive for all youth, including beginners or students who may feel unsure at first. Small groups and steady, hands-on instruction help students build confidence at their own pace.
