Helping Youth Learn Safely on the Water

Boat Safe gives young people a safe, supportive place to learn boating skills with guidance from certified captains. Our programs are built around hands-on experience, small-group instruction, and a focus on safety that gives families confidence.

WHAT WE DO

We teach students the fundamentals of safe boating through clear instruction and real on-water practice. Every lesson is designed to help young learners understand the water, make safe choices, and feel confident operating a boat.

Our approach includes:

Hands-on activities that build real boating skills
Small class sizes with close supervision
Certified captains who are background-checked and First Aid/CPR trained
A welcoming environment for all youth
Time outdoors and away from screens for a healthy digital detox

Founded with Youth in Mind

Boat Safe was started by Todd Hanes, an Ohio educator and U.S. Coast Guard–credentialed captain who has spent his career supporting young people, including those in underserved communities. His experience and leadership ensure our programs are safe, accessible, and built on proven educational practice.
